Le Manoir offers seclusion - but not isolation - being only a 3 minute drive to the nearest town where you can collect your daily croissants & baguettes. We are lucky to have several amazing markets offering wonderful French produce not too far away. Only a few minutes drive will take you to local distilleries with free tastings set amongst their vineyards. In the area we have an abundance of interesting restaurants to sample.
You will enjoy a superb location in the Charente, close to the border of the Dordogne. The Charente is famous for its warm climate and classic seaside resorts, romanesque architecture and open countryside. The Dordogne, meanwhile, is renowned for its magnificent chateaux, prehistoric caves, rich history and superb cuisine.
This area of France is renowned for its superb markets selling a range of fresh local produce. There are plentiful opportunities to experience these traditional markets with many being very close to Le Manoir. The local town of Blanzac Porcheresse holds a lively market every Saturday.
The main city of Angouleme - approximately 30 minutes drive from Le Manoir, has a market everyday of the week. Les Halles is the main, covered market & some of France's finest produce can be found here, including a wonderful oyster & lobster bar!
High on any 'to do' list whilst staying at Le Manoir should be a trip to Le Maine Giraud. This famous Cognac house and winery is set in 40 acres of vineyards where some of the regions best cognac, wine and Pineau de Charentes is produced. Brantôme - a beautiful village known as 'Little Venice' due to its waterside setting is less than an hours drive away. Here you can go canoeing on the river, explore the magnificent abbey or relax in one of the cafés to soak up the ambience.
Angoulême - the capital of the Charente - and Perigueux - the capital of the Dordogne - are also both within an hours drive from Le Manoir. They are well worth a visit for their historic city centres with cobbled streets and beautiful architecture.
The classic seaside resort at Royan and the marina at La Rochelle with its medieval fortifications are approximately a 1.5 hour drive and make a great day trip. There is a man made river beach closer to home at Aubeterre - a very pretty village 35 minutes away.
Cognac - home of the world's best known brandies - is just 45 minutes by car. Famous brands such as as Remy Martin, Martell, Hennessy and Courvoisier produce Cognac here and it is possible to tour many of their facilities. The old town situated on the left bank of the river Charente is well worth a visit.
